5 Day Basic Cruising

During this 5 Day basic training course, you will learn the element of both Sail Canada’s Basic Cruising Standard and CPS Marine Radio Course (ROCM). These courses are designed for novice sailors who are starting out on the ocean.

Everyday on board is a learning adventure cruising on British Columbia's West Coast – a perfect combination of hands-on participation and instruction based on recognized cruising courses.

The main objective of this course is for the student to be able to safely cruise as both skipper and crew of a sloop rigged keelboat of at least 6-10 meters in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. Certification requires a curriculum of Ashore Knowledge and approximately 18 hours afloat skills with practical hands-on operation of Tula.

5 Day Intermediate Cruising

This 5-day cruising course offers training in Sail Canada’s Intermediate Cruising Standard. You can take your skill set to the next level! The objective of this course is to be able to cruise safely as both skipper and crew of a sailing yacht of 8-12 meters in moderate wind and sea conditions. The standard emphasizes on-the-water skills at a level acceptable for most bare boat chartering on extended cruises in coastal waters.

This course requires the following pre-requisites:

  • Recognized first aid certificate;
  • VHF radio operator’s certificate;
  • Completed the SC Coastal Navigation Standard.

To maximize the likelihood of successfully completing this course, one should preferably have:

  • Experience as skipper of at least ten day sails;
  • Have applied the knowledge and practiced skills in the Basic Cruising Standard;
  • Be able to consistently demonstrate the skills learned in Basic Cruising Standard.

Introduction to Boating & Private Cruising Courses

This 1-day course is intended for those who have an interest in a sailboat, but may have limited knowledge and experience. Peter can help you determine whether the cruising life is for you with this introductory course. This one day cruise out of Tsehum Harbour is to such delightful anchorages as Glenthorne Passage. We will introduce novice sailors to safe practices in preparing to leave the dock while underway and returning to the dock. There is no examination, no prerequisites, and students will participate in hands-on sailing on this all-inclusive course.

Ashore Knowledge you’ll learn:

  • Basic boat check for seaworthiness;
  • Review safety equipment location and use;
  • Discuss basic safety when participating as crew.

Afloat Knowledge:

  • Participate in preparation of a boat for departure;
  • Participate in departure from dock as crew;
  • Demonstrate safe behavior while underway;
  • Participate in returning to dock as crew;
  • Assist to secure and put away vessel.

We can plan private cruising courses of longer duration to interesting coastal destinations which can incorporate events and activities such as historical locations, wine-tasting, music concerts, and in-depth fishing.

MARINE RADIO COURSE (ROCM)

The Maritime Radio course teaches emergency radio procedures and everyday operating techniques. Learn all about the uses of marine radios, choice of frequencies, operation, phonetic alphabet, procedural words and phrases, as well as Digital Selective Calling and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, (DSC/GMDSS). All mariners, including recreational boaters, will want to take advantage of the many features and capabilities of this innovative form “automatic” radio. Secure your lifeline.

You can attend courses we run or you can challenge this test and we can invigilate you sitting this test.

We supply the study materials including text and CD-ROM and these materials will prepare you for the Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime) exam. To operate a maritime radio, you need the certificate. It’s the law!
